Understanding McLennan County Releases
McLennan County released inmates do not move into one shared public database. The record follows the custodian and the event. A person may leave the Highway 6 Jail on bond, after time served, through a dismissal or release order, or at the end of a county sentence. Another person may leave the county list because the Sheriff transferred custody to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, U.S. Marshals Service, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, another county, or a treatment placement. Only the first group has necessarily returned to the community.
The Sheriff's hourly Current Inmate Listing is a snapshot. Presence shows that McLennan County represented the person as confined when the report was made. Absence does not state what happened. A release or transfer record, paired with the court docket and any destination-agency record, provides the stronger answer. The legal order and the physical custody entry can bear different times because an order may authorize release before jail processing is complete.
- Time served
- A sentence satisfied by time already spent in custody.
- Discharge
- The end of a sentence or supervision term, not merely a move between facilities.
- Detainer
- A request or legal basis for another agency to take or keep custody.
- Transfer
- Movement to another custodian while confinement continues.
McLennan County Release Paths
The reason for departure controls the next search. Bond or a personal-recognizance order can permit community release while the criminal case remains open. A dismissal ends the named charge but may not clear an unrelated hold. A time-served judgment or completed county sentence can end local confinement. Probation places a person under a court order in the community. Parole and mandatory supervision follow a state-prison term and belong to the state system.
| Custody event | What it means | Best next record |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or release order | Authority to leave on the case, after processing and other holds are cleared | Jail register plus bond or court order |
| Time served or sentence end | Local sentence has been satisfied | Booking-out entry and judgment |
| TDCJ commitment | County custody ended but state confinement began | County transfer entry and TDCJ record |
| ICE or USMS pickup | A federal custodian may continue detention | Transfer record and the correct federal channel |
| Probation or parole | The person may be in the community under supervision | Court docket or TDCJ parole information |
A release label should retain its source and scope. “Released from BOP custody,” for example, does not rule out supervision or custody elsewhere. Likewise, a county transfer date is not a community release date. This vocabulary matters when reconnecting with someone or documenting the custody sequence.
McLennan Release Record Fields
Texas State Library Local Schedule PS identifies the durable county record. The jail register must contain the person's name and gender, intake number, reason for commitment or confinement, and a release or transfer date. McLennan may maintain more detail in a booking-out or release sheet, but the public research did not confirm a local data dictionary. A request should therefore ask for additional details only “if maintained,” rather than treating every possible field as guaranteed.
| Confirmed or requested field | What it can establish |
|---|---|
| Name and intake number | Connects the record to the correct booking episode |
| Reason for commitment | Explains the authority for confinement |
| Release or transfer date | Marks the end of that county custody episode |
| Release type or authority, if maintained | May distinguish bond, order, sentence completion, or transfer |
| Destination, if maintained | May identify TDCJ, ICE, another jail, or community release |
| Booking photograph | Links an image to the booking, not to present status |
The permanent register is different from supporting custody paperwork. Schedule PS generally keeps booking-in, booking-out, transport, and release documentation for two years after release or transfer. Property inventories and return receipts have the same general minimum. Those periods describe record retention. They do not say how long a name or photograph remains online, and they do not override a lawful exception or redaction.
Request McLennan Release Records
The McLennan Sheriff GovQA portal accepts open-records requests, provides tracking and downloads, and displays a public archive. A focused request is more useful than asking staff to decide whether someone was released. Supply enough identity detail to isolate one booking and ask for existing documents.
- Provide the full name, date of birth, approximate booking dates, and any known CID, booking, cause, or arrest number.
- Request the jail-register entry and the booking-in and booking-out or release sheet for that episode.
- Ask for the date and time, release versus transfer, authority, facility, and destination if those fields are maintained.
- Add the linked bond, commitment, release order, property receipt, or booking photograph only when needed.
- Ask for electronic delivery and a cost estimate. Permit the office to contact you before work proceeds if narrowing could reduce cost.

Texas Government Code Chapter 552 governs public-information requests, but public does not mean that every field must appear online or be released without review. Sheriff request fees were not published in a specific local schedule found during research. Ask for an estimate. Court copies follow separate clerk fees and procedures.
The manifest image below shows the official portal choices. The Sheriff records portal separates new submissions, tracking, and archived requests.
Use the submission path for a person-specific jail register or booking-out record, then keep the tracking number with the response.
McLennan Release Court Records
McLennan's court path has two layers. The free Case Index covers cases from 2001 forward and general converted legacy information from the early 1980s. It can reveal docket events tied to bond, dismissal, judgment, sentence, revocation, or discharge. The underlying signed order or judgment comes from the appropriate clerk and may be needed when the index label is unclear.
Local court allocation matters. The County Clerk handles Class A and B misdemeanors and appealed Class C cases. The District Clerk handles felonies. Municipal and justice courts handle their own Class C matters. A court event shows legal authority, while the jail record shows physical custody processing. Preserve both dates and labels rather than forcing them into one “release date.”
The county explanation of index coverage is captured below.
The index is a finding aid. Order a copy of the judgment, bond order, dismissal, or commitment when the precise legal outcome matters.
McLennan Release Records After Expunction
Release alone does not erase a booking or make a person eligible for expunction. Texas Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 55A and Government Code Chapter 411's nondisclosure provisions turn on the case, outcome, dates, and other legal conditions. McLennan advertised an Expunction Fair held on July 17, 2026 for some qualifying local arrests, including examples involving cases never filed, no-billed, dismissed, diverted, acquitted, or pardoned. The event date must remain attached; it is not a standing promise of help.
Texas Business and Commerce Code Chapter 109 regulates covered private criminal-record publishers. It requires a correction process and bars charging a fee to remove or correct covered information. It does not ban official publication or guarantee deletion of every truthful booking photograph. A court order can change public availability, but the order and agency response are the proper sources for that change.
Find McLennan County Released Inmates
Start with custody, not a broad name match. The Sheriff's Current Inmate Listing is updated hourly and answers who is shown in county custody at its timestamp. It is not a recent-release feed. Save the report time and match the name with the CID, booking date, offense, and cause details. Then follow a clear verification chain.
- Identify whether the last custodian was McLennan County, TDCJ, BOP, ICE, or a juvenile authority.
- Check the timestamped current source, treating absence only as a clue.
- Search the McLennan court index for the related bond, dismissal, judgment, commitment, or release order.
- Request the permanent jail-register entry and booking-out record from Sheriff Records.
- If the record says transfer, search the named destination system. If it says release, retain the jail entry with the legal order.
McLennan County publishes no verified official rolling 24-hour or 72-hour release list. The 24-Hour Release List workflow therefore begins with the record request and court check, not a made-up feed. A before-and-after roster comparison can identify the booking to request, but it cannot supply a release reason.
The official Sheriff page is shown below. The McLennan County Sheriff gateway labels the inmate list as current and states its hourly update cadence.
That wording is the key limit: the source proves current publication status, not release history.
McLennan TDCJ Release Search
Use the TDCJ Online Inmate Search only when the person entered the Texas prison system. Search by a known TDCJ number or other identifiers the live form accepts, select the matching person, and open the details. TDCJ publishes location, offense, and a Projected Release Date. Later processing may add a Scheduled Release Date and Scheduled Release Location. Neither field is the same as an actual release.
| Field or channel | Use and limit |
|---|---|
| Name and TDCJ number | Match the correct state record |
| Projected Release Date | Conditional calculation, not a promise |
| Scheduled date and location | Operational plan that may still change |
| IVSS actual Release Date | Retrospective state-prison release field when populated |
| TDCJ email history | Fallback when an older discharge no longer appears online |
TDCJ email requests can return prior incarceration history, current incarceration, and the projected date at no charge. Provide a full name and TDCJ number, or exact birth date if the number is unknown. The service does not provide photographs or Social Security numbers. Telephone locator staff are available through 936-295-6371 or 800-535-0283 during published weekday office hours.
A McLennan bond-out or county sentence completion will not necessarily appear in TDCJ. County release records remain the right source for a county-only episode. Likewise, a county register that says “transfer to TDCJ” proves the local handoff, not later state release.
McLennan Release Supervision Checks
Parole and probation are separate. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles decides parole and mandatory supervision. TDCJ Parole Division supervises people released from state prison. McLennan County Community Supervision and Corrections Department, or CSCD, supervises court-ordered community supervision. The county court docket is the public layer for probation because CSCD files are judicial records and are not an unrestricted public name search.
A favorable parole vote is not proof of physical release. Board codes may require a later month, a program, or plan approval. Check the TDCJ release-processing line and actual release fields. The Waco District Parole Office serves McLennan and nearby counties, while McLennan CSCD handles local probation. More precise agency roles appear on the Parole & Probation page.
McLennan Release Reentry Options
Some local releases involve services, but availability is not universal. McLennan specialty-court material reports tailored mental-health discharge plans, coordinated treatment or placement, and a 30-day medication supply for some Mental Health Court participants. These supports depend on eligibility and the court program. They should not be assumed for every person leaving jail.
An official McLennan Community College resource guide identifies House Where Jesus Shines as a men's residential reentry resource in Waco. Current space and eligibility should be confirmed directly. A referral or residence does not by itself prove release status; pair it with the custody record.
McLennan Inmate Property After Release
The Sheriff's ordinary Property and Evidence page expressly excludes property booked at the jail. Its public property form and 90-day rule therefore do not govern inmate property. Jail Intake, at 254-757-5120, is the documented contact, but no public jail-property release process was found. Ask Intake what applies to the specific booking rather than relying on a general property page.
Schedule PS makes a property inventory or return receipt a useful record target. Those materials are generally retained for two years after release or transfer. Request the existing inventory and receipt with the booking identifiers. Do not assume the receipt proves community release, since property may be handled during a transfer.
McLennan Federal Release Checks
A person removed from the county list may have entered federal custody. The BOP Inmate Locator covers sentenced federal prisoners from 1982 forward and accepts federal numbers or name and biographical details. A result can show release date and location. “Not in BOP custody” does not rule out U.S. Marshals custody, another jail, supervision, or another agency.
The ICE Online Detainee Locator accepts an A-number and country of birth, or exact name, birth date, and country of birth. It includes current detainees and some people released from ICE custody during a limited recent window. ICE warns that data may lag and some records are omitted, so phone confirmation may be needed.
An ICE inspection from 2023 identified McLennan County Jail as an over-72-hour detention site. That historic finding does not prove a current contract or current ICE population. It does show why county roster removal may be an ICE handoff rather than freedom. The county transfer record and present ODLS result must answer the person-specific question.
The successful manifest capture below shows the separate BOP search form. The official federal locator distinguishes identifying-number and name searches.
Use the federal result only for the BOP custody episode and reconcile it with the federal judgment or other custodian when needed.
McLennan Custody Record Comparison
Each source answers a narrow question. Using the current roster as a release archive, or using a TDCJ date for a county-only booking, creates the most common errors.
| Source | What it proves | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly county list | Published current custody at the report time | Why a missing name left |
| County jail register | Release or transfer date for the booking | Every detail of the court case |
| McLennan court record | Legal order, judgment, or disposition | Exact physical exit time |
| TDCJ and IVSS | State-prison dates and status | County-only bond release |
| BOP or ICE locator | Status within that federal system | No custody anywhere else |
Can a signed bond prove someone walked out? No. It authorizes release on the covered case, but processing or another hold may remain. Pair the order with the Sheriff's booking-out entry.
McLennan County Release Facilities
The McLennan County Jail / Highway 6 Jail and Jack Harwell Detention Center share one practical Sheriff verification path. Public sources do not provide a reliable building-by-building release log. A move between the buildings is not release. Sheriff Records, the jail register, and the case docket provide the custody sequence.
- McLennan County Jail / Highway 6 Jail, the primary adult county facility and intake route.
- Jack Harwell Detention Center, an adult detention building within current county operations.
- Bill Logue Juvenile Justice Center, a secure juvenile facility with different confidentiality and access rules.
The former downtown jail at 520 Columbus is being converted to the McLennan County Judicial Center. State project records list construction beginning in 2025 with estimated completion in 2027. Older directories may still call it a jail, but current release routing belongs to the Highway 6 and Jack Harwell contacts.
Juvenile records must remain separate from adult released-inmate searches. An authorized person should contact the juvenile facility or court. Public name-search promises are not appropriate for juvenile release and placement records.
